Depression is on the rise. More and more people feel the need to take antidepressants, a classification of drugs that comes with numerous and life-threatening side effects. Sadly, doctors are only too ready to prescribe them. Patients are unaware that they have other safer and far more effective options.

More often than not, depression is due to the depletion of serotonin, the major neurotransmitter among all brain chemicals. Each year depression strikes over an astounding 17 million adults, teens, and children in the U.S. Over 12 million diagnosed are women. The numbers are at alarming, epidemic proportions. Remember, serotonin is depleted by many things. A few primary factors are the over-consumption of processed and refined foods, sodas, caffeine, nicotine, high GI carbs, sugar, HFCS, and artificial sweeteners. Regrettably, Americans consume these in excessive amounts.
I’m shocked that no one in the medical industry ever questions the direct link between diet and depression. Never have I heard anyone say that when they went to see their doctor for depression, their doctor asked, inquired, and/or expressed concern about their “diet.” It simply doesn’t happen. It’s far easier, not to mention, financially more rewarding to prescribe yet another drug. Instead of our doctors, AMA, FDA, or FTC promoting wellness and preventive methods of treatment and educating people about how to eat a healthy, nutritious diet, combined with efficacious herbal supplementation to naturally alleviate depression, they’d rather prescribe DRUGS—be it Prozac, Zoloft, or another deadly antidepressant. European countries have used herbal remedies to treat depression for centuries, and with tremendous success.
It’s shocking how the U.S. pharmaceutical industry has been glorifying their many antidepressant drugs. For example, a certain TV commercial: “Do you have a special event coming up? A family affair? A celebration? Call your doctor today to see if you’re eligible for Prozac Weekly!” This advertisement was terribly alarming. It seductively played more like a beer commercial! More disturbing yet is that they found it acceptable to treat depression, to offer happiness, for only a week at a time.
